Screwturn Nutcrackers

Screwturn nutcrackers were invented in the early 17th century with the oldest known screw nutcracker appearing in England in 1631. Screwturn nutcrackers are meant to apply gradual pressure to the shell without damaging the nut inside. The first screwturn nutcrackers were initially simple in design, but it did not take long for artists to begin adding intricate details and carving the nutcrackers into the shape animals or recognizable figures. This particular screwturn nutcracker was handcarved and likely dates back to 19th century Germany or France.
